Let’s Get Technical

The HIFU Anti-Ageing Face Lift treatment works by sending highly focused acoustic energy below the skin’s surface to cause cellular friction within the molecules, resulting in precise, target-point heating. The friction between these molecules produces heat and thermal injury at a focal point within the skin tissue to create thermal coagulation zones at 3 selected depths (1.5mm, 3.0mm and 4.5mm), leaving the skin’s surface unaffected.

Delivering this focused ultra-sonic energy to the dermal tissue, it causes immediate trauma to the treatment zone which then promotes heating, immediate contraction and collagen stimulation – Collagen is the protein in the skin that’s responsible for its elasticity and structure. The healing process works over approximately 180 days, stimulating long-term tissue repair leading to further lifting and tightening.

The SMAS layer (superficial muscular aponeurotic system) is the layer that sits between your muscle and your fat layer and is the actual area a plastic surgeon would pull and tighten under a surgical operation using a knife. It is composed of collagen and elastin fibres, similar to those of the dermal tissue, and when treated, gives a long-lasting tightening effect.

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS?

As a completely non-surgical, non-invasive procedure, HiFu (High Intensity Focused Ultrasound) offers patients many benefits over other Face Lifting procedures. It is a cost effective alternative to a Surgical Face Lift and does not involve anaesthesia, sedation or incisions, so requires no downtime for recovery.

  • Smooths the skin
  • Firms and tightens the décolletage
  • Brightens and rejuvenates your complexion
  • Requires no downtime or recovery

WHAT AREAS CAN BE TREATED?

This treatment is fantastic for overall skin tightening and rejuvenation as well as –

  • Eyebrow and Forehead Lift
  • Mid face Tightening and Lifting
  • Jawline and Submental Sculpting
  • Smooth Fine Lines and Wrinkles around the eyes & mouth
  • Firm and Tighten Skin Laxity on the face, neck and body
HOW MANY TREATMENTS DO I NEED?

You should achieve excellent cosmetic results with only one session, which is one of the great advantages of a HIFU treatment. However, depending on your goals and expectations, you may require a further treatment after six to nine months, or perhaps a little later in order to maintain results.

HIFU can also be extremely effective when combined with other treatments, as part of a custom plan. During your no-obligation consultation, your practitioner will help you create a plan tailored especially for your own needs and goals.

WHEN WILL I SEE RESULTS?

Some patients may see immediate initial improvements, however, the optimal time when patients will see lifting, tightening and firming is two-three months after treatment with gradual improvements noticed once the skin has had time to repair and produce new collagen and elastin which holds the structure of the skin.

Your treatment will still actively continue to work for around 6-12 months post treatment, deep within the skin forming new collagen and improving elastin with results  lasting up to 2 years.

DO I NEED A CONSULTATION?

Yes. Before we can carry out your treatment we will need to carry out an in-depth consultation to assess your health and lifestyle to ensure you are suitable for the treatment. This will also allow your practitioner to tailor a bespoke treatment plan that will be most suitable for you, your concerns and goals.

FAQS

What happens during my treatment?

3D HIFU facelift is performed using a small smooth hand piece that delivers the highly focused ultrasound energy to the treatment area, stimulating new collagen production via targeted input of ultrasound energy into the deep tissue layers of the skin. This heats the tissues, triggering a natural skin response that initiates the body’s healing process stimulating collagen and elastin production.

This technology bypasses the skin’s surface and focuses entirely on the deep, structural layers of the skin where collagen is deposited. This means that the surface of your skin is not affected, and after the treatment, you can go about your usual daily activities.

Although you may see an initial lift a couple of weeks following treatment, results will appear over two – three months following the treatment as your body will continue to produce fresh collagen.

Is HiFu safe?

HiFu has been clinically proven to be highly effective and safe with FDA approval. It was first approved in 2009 for facial lifting but then the device was also cleared by the FDA in 2014 to improve lines and wrinkles of the upper chest and neckline (décolletage) and with our experienced practitioners and professional grade equipment, you can feel rest assured that your safety is paramount and know you’re in safe hands.

Is HiFu painful?

Some patients describe feeling a slight tingling sensation or warmth on the skin, however this is only felt during the treatment and does not continue when the patient leaves.

So while it is not completely pain-free, it is 100% tolerable and would not cause you to feel any major discomfort.

Is there any downtime?

Because the HIFU treatment is non-invasive, there is virtually no downtime. Some patients may experience minor swelling and some redness and a mild tingling or tenderness, however these are superficial and are temporary. With this in mind, patients will be able to return to normal activities straight after and there is no recovery measures required.  The HIFU is known as the “lunchtime face lift.”

Is there any side effects?

Some patients may experience minor side effects such as some redness, skin sensitivity, numbness, heat reaction and discomfort but this is normal and should subside within a few hours.

Some patients may experience a mild sensation of toothache around the jawbone, if you’ve had a treatment in this area or those with sensitive skin may experience swelling and light bruising after but this is completely normal and will fade within a few days.

You may take over the counter paracetamol but do not take ibuprofen as this will reduce the bodies responses to injury which is the basis of the treatment.

HIFU can fool your body into thinking it needs to heal and make repairs to your collagen and elastin. We call this micro-damage.

Am I suitable for HiFu?

Certain medications and supplements such as blood thinning medications including aspirin and ibuprofen can interfere with the healing and therefore cannot be taken for the week leading up to and the week following the treatment.

Also supplements such as vitamin E, St Johns Wort, Ginkgo Biloba, Fish Oil should be discontinued a week before the treatment to avoid bruising.

Topical retinoids and Alpha-Beta Hydroxy Acids must be discontinued about 2 weeks prior to treatment

Treatment is not advised if you have any of the following conditions:

  • Liver and kidney malfunction
  • Fragile skin
  • Excessive dryness
  • Keloid scar tissue
  • Regular anti-inflammatory medication
  • Active acne pustules and papules and hernia/mesh.

Treatment cannot go ahead if you have any of the following conditions:

  • Pregnancy
  • Heart condition
  • Pacemaker
  • Thrombosis
  • Thrombophlebitis
  • Anticoagulant medication
  • Cancer or history of cancer
  • Metal prothesis
  • Implants (in the area being treated)
  • Diabetes
  • Epilepsy
  • Auto immune conditions
  • Inflammation or infection on the treatment area

I’ve had fillers, Botox or a Thread lift – can I still have the HIFU?

Technically you can, however we do not recommend it and it is important to note that any procedure that raises the temperature of the skin can cause swelling and fluid accumulation in the skin which could cause the Botox to migrate if done immediately. Heat in the skin can also cause the Botox to wear off sooner.

It is best to wait one – two weeks after Botox before having any type of laser, ultrasound or radio frequency treatments.

An in-depth consultation will be carried out prior to your appointment where your practitioner will go through all this with you but If you have concerns regarding the treatment or contraindications please contact us via email or phone and a member of our team will be able to assist.

Precare Advice
  • We cannot treat recently tanned or sunburned skin with HIFU. You must refrain from being overexposed to the sun (or getting a tan) for at least 2 weeks before your treatment sessions.
  • Avoid using any chemicals which irritate the skin for at least a week prior to your treatment as this may prevent treatment.
  • If you are taking prescription medicines such as antibiotics, make sure to book your HIFU session at least two weeks after the completion of the prescribed course. Certain drugs have a tendency to make the skin more light-sensitive.

One day before your treatment

Please check that you do not have a fever or cold sore the day before your treatment is about to commence as cold sores will impair the treatment process. In the unfortunate case that you end up with either a day or two before your HIFU session, please call us to  reschedule your appointment for when you have fully recovered.

On the day of your treatment

You must not use any moisturiser or apply any sort of make-up on the day of your treatment. Please attend the appointment with a clean and dry face.

Aftercare Advice

Although there is no downtime or recovery with our HIFU treatment, it is important for patients who have undergone this treatment to understand how to care for their bodies after in order to prevent complications and side effects that can minimise the gains of the treatment. This is especially important because it will help to increase the chances of success with the treatment.

Avoid make-up

For best results we recommend not wearing make up for at least 48 hours post treatment. However eye makeup such as eye liner and mascara is still fine.

Avoid the sun

After the HIFU skin treatment, it is important for you to try to prevent yourself from exposure to sunlight and cold for a few weeks. This will help to prevent hyperpigmentation and reduce the chance of sunburn and skin damage. The use of sunblock cream is also encouraged, as this will help to prevent destructive ultraviolet light from the sun from directly touching the skin. This should be continued until the skin tightening process is completed.

Take a break from alcohol

Directly after your treatment, your body will be left with some deactivated fat. When that happens, the liver is tasked with breaking down the discarded fat before the body can get rid of it. Consuming alcohol means that the liver now has to break down alcohol in addition to the deactivated fat which can be dangerous to your overall health. Besides the fact that alcohol overworks your liver, it also reduces the density of your blood. The implications of less dense blood are that excessive bleeding may occur since blood clotting will be a challenge. Avoid drinking alcohol at all costs.

Keep Hydrated (with water)

As they say, water is life. So after the HIFU treatment procedure, water should be your favourite drink and must come first before other beverages that you consume. Water will help in your recovery by aiding in quicker recovery and more efficient rejuvenation of collagen proteins in the treated area so drink as much water as possible and keep your body hydrated.

Don’t scratch your skin

As sweet as scratching the body may be when itching, it is advisable not to scratch your skin after a treatment. At this time, your skin will be very sensitive, and scratching it puts you at the risk of skin damage. If you have scabs, you are also advised to allow them to fall off naturally. Trying to remove them may lead to a large wound, which may lead to infection. If itching becomes too much to bear, splashing cold water on your face will help.

Avoid hot showers and baths

Hot water tends to strip the skin away of its natural protective oils. Your skin desperately needs these oils to avoid skin irritation right after the treatment. Therefore when taking your bath, use cold water as this will help keep the natural protective oil on your skin and also prevent skin irritation. If at all you must use hot water, you are better of using lukewarm water as this will facilitate the quick recovery of your skin.
